Students' error in solving math problems can be repeated by students and affect their understanding of subsequent material. The errors made by students need to be analyzed in order to obtain solutions that can improve mathematics achievement. This study aims to determine the types and factors causing students' errors in solving problems on set material in grade VII of junior high school. This type of research is qualitative research conducted in grade VII of SMPN 17 Makassar, by selecting 2 student subjects with the lowest scores based on the results of diagnostic tests. Data in the form of diagnostic test results and interview data were analyzed using the following steps: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/data verification. The results of the study showed that the errors made by student subject 1 based on Watson's criteria were inaccurate data, incorrect procedures, and missing conclusions. The errors made by student subject 2 were inaccurate data, incorrect procedures, missing conclusions, response level conflicts, indirect manipulation, skill hierarchy problems, and in addition to the seven categories proposed by Watson. The factors causing student errors based on in-depth exploration with interviews were lack of practice in applying concepts, incorrect interpretation of the meaning of questions, lack of understanding of concepts, lack of careful calculation, lack of skills in understanding numbers, and incorrect steps in solving problems. By knowing the types of errors and the causes of the errors, a teacher can plan better learning to reduce these errors.
