Generative AI & AI-Assisted Technologies Policy
Linguistics Initiative recognizes the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in academic writing and data analysis. This policy delineates the boundaries for authors, reviewers, and editors.
1. Authorship Eligibility
Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) CANNOT be credited as authors or co-authors. Authorship carries legal and scientific accountability that cannot be assumed by software.
2. Permitted Use & Mandatory Disclosure
Authors may use AI tools to improve language fluency, check grammar, or assist in code generation, provided that:
- The intellectual substance, interpretations, and critical analyses remain solely the original contribution of the human authors.
- Authors include an explicit AI Disclosure Statement before the References section detailing which AI model was used and for what specific purpose.
3. Prohibition for Peer Reviewers and Editors
Reviewers and editors are strictly prohibited from uploading unreleased manuscripts or portions thereof into generative AI tools. Manuscripts are confidential intellectual property; uploading them violates author confidentiality and data privacy rights.
